Spring Update 2009
As you are probably aware the property ‘slump’ hit Spain before the UK and it looks like the recovery will start here first as well.
Local agents are reporting a strong start to the year in terms of enquiries and viewings but this has yet to translate itself into sales. It’s fair to say that the Brits are not amongst the most active due to the weak pound but for those with substantial savings earning pretty well nothing on deposit then the desire to buy in Spain may start to outweigh the disadvantageous exchange rate – certainly those needing mortgages have never seen rates lower.
You’ll be fed up with me rattling on about the ‘best time to buy’ but it’s clear that, at the moment, purchasers have the whip hand and can take advantage of some bargain offers.
Another thing to bear in mind is that the holiday market is still pretty strong and there’s some merit in looking at a holiday home investment to bring an income which you’re not getting from your UK savings – also giving you the opportunity to offset expenses including mortgage finance against income here and/or at home.
